Can a Name Predict the Future?

Greetings from Melbourne, Australia!
I've made it to Australia, and after weeks of anticipation, I finally got to hold my new grandson in my arms!
There is something extraordinary about holding a newborn, looking into his eyes, and wondering about the person he will become. My grandson has striking black hair and beautiful blue eyes, and now he has a name—a rather grand one at that!
Names carry histories, expectations, aspirations, and sometimes the weight of entire civilizations. But how much of our future is written into the names we are given? Can a name shape a destiny, or do we grow into something entirely our own?
Today's poem, "Can a Name Predict the Future," grew out of these questions. As I held my grandson and contemplated his name, I found myself thinking about the difference between greatness and goodness. History remembers conquerors, but perhaps the greater achievement is to mend what others have broken.
My hope for this little boy is not that he will conquer nations, but that he will touch hearts, cultivate kindness, and find his own way in the world.
Can a Name Predict the Future
Now that the newborn
with the stark black haira
and blue eyes has been named,
what can we predict of his future?
Is the die cast by his name?
Large,
unique,
royal.
A name to live up to.
Dark, imposing,
not grim,
but waiting to be proven—
a great name.
Will he be great?
Can he see how many people
weighed their souls on his name?
He seems to be a peaceful child.
His name is a conqueror of nations.
Let’s hope that he is a mender of hearts.
Just $5 Away from My Fundraising Goal!
As I celebrate this beautiful new chapter in my family's life, I have another reason to be grateful. I'm just $5 away from reaching my fundraising goal for the Tupelo Press 30/30 Project!
Throughout October, I've been writing a poem every day as part of this literary marathon, challenging myself creatively while raising money to support independent poetry publishing.
It's been quite a month—writing poetry while traveling across continents, experiencing new cultures, and welcoming a new life into the family. Through it all, poetry has given me a way to capture the moments that matter.
If you've been following my journey, reading my poems, sharing my posts, or contributing to my fundraiser, thank you. Your encouragement means more than you know.
Just one more $5 donation will get me across the finish line! If you haven't contributed yet and would like to help, this is a wonderful opportunity to support both my 30/30 journey and the important work of Tupelo Press.
And if I've already reached my goal by the time you read this, please know that additional contributions are always welcome!
Thank you for being part of this adventure, from Indonesia to Australia, from poetry to grandmotherhood, and from one generation to the next.
Here's to new beginnings, unexpected inspiration, and the hope that the children we welcome into this world will make it a kinder place.
With gratitude,
Katerina Canyon
